Femonomics on forced sterilization

I am appreciative of the thoughtful engagement given to a doctor who brags about sterilizing an Tanzanian woman while saving her life during childbirth.  I first read about  it on Feministe, but followed the original authors back to a new intellectual hotspot: Femonomics. Check out my favorite two paragraphs:

No matter how benign this paternalism masquerading as benevolence might sound, forced sterilization is a crime that is committed against women (and sometimes men, such as in Indira Ghandi’s India), stripping them of free agency and human dignity. Patients get to decide what medical procedures are performed on them for a variety of reasons. They get to decide because there is no medical procedure that does not have risks as well as benefits, no matter how enormous the benefits or how small the risks. They get to decide because lots of things that doctors used to think were really good (e.g., hormone replacement therapy) are sometimes really bad. They get to decide because what makes sense for one person may not make sense for someone else. Fully informed consent, where someone is told of the risks and benefits of a procedure, and allowed to make their own, non-coerced, lucid decision, is one of the hallmarks of ethical medical care.

In the case of sterilization specifically, the stakes can be incredibly high. For some women, being able to produce children may be their guarantee of economic security. If they stop producing, their husband may seek another wife, and cut off spousal support. In Zambia, infertile women have told of being divorced and treated as a burden by their community. In South Asia, failure to produce children has been offered up as one predicator of bride burning. In an environment where women lack access to many conventional forms of capital, their ability to produce something valued by society in the form of children may be vital to their physical and economic security.

Dumb arguments about breastfeeding

Just to speed  up your life, Feministe has outlined the more idiotic arguments against public breastfeeding.

Here are the tired, stretched-out, armpit-stained arguments that won’t fly:

1. Breastfeeding is comparable to pooping. One is food at the beginning, the other is food at the end. One has everything the body needs, the other is everything the body has decided it doesn’t need. Changing a diaper != breastfeeding. (Also, public sex != breastfeeding.)

2. Breasts are sexytime. For some people, necks and knees and earlobes are just as erogenous as breasts, and yet we’re allowed to walk around in shorts and boatneck tops. And unlike the aforementioned body parts, breasts can be used to feed people.

3. Breastfeeding is a private, intimate moment between mother and baby. And dinner is a private, intimate moment between me and my cheeseburger. Breastfeeding = hungry baby + accommodating, lactating woman. Which is not to say that breastfeeding isn’t intimate–and natural and beautiful, too–but it’s also functional.

4. Breastfeeding should take place in bathrooms. Generally, private, intimate moments in public restrooms are frowned upon (and that’s a mistake you only make once–sorry again, Georgia Dome!), but apparently it is appropriate to feed a helpless infant in a place where people are pooping.

5. Moms can always pump or use formula. Not every woman can pump, not every baby will take a bottle, and even then trying to schedule the pumping and the feeding and the toting of perishable bodily fluids can be a hassle.

6. Ew, I don’t want to see that. Yeah? Well, I don’t want to see your FACE.

Violence against animals to frame killing humans

I think Carol J. Adams is one of the most important thinkers of this century.

Her work as a feminist vegetarian ethicist has helped me better understand how violence against animals is a fruitful comparison available for those who hurt humans.

Consider the US soldiers who killed Afghani civilians and then took parts of their bodies as souvenirs.

In his testimony, Gibbs denied responsibility for the killings, but did admit to slicing off body parts from Afghans, including the fingers of a man, and keeping them or giving them to other soldiers as trophies.

“In my mind, I was there to take the antlers off the deer. You have to come to terms with what you’re doing. Shooting people is not an easy thing to do,” said Gibbs.

Looking at objectification of women from the side

The process of objectification — to take a living, complex 3-dimensional person and render them into two-dimensions –  is a significant part of modern communication.  Advertising and television helping to constitute our very desires.  Reflecting on previous invitations of objectification can help us to understand how we are being organized.

Fray magazine has twenty images of playboy playmate lips juxtaposed with the causes of their deaths. The artist is Jennifer Daniel.

There are some obvious problems with this project.  Using previously objectified people runs the risk that the reader will simply re-create the old pattern of knowledge.  But something about this obscuring of the sexy bodies and the bringing forward of the deaths gets at the realness of humans who have been pushed aside for their body images.

For instance Miss November 1969 who’s turnoffs include: “people who are always late,” dies in an auto accident.  Was she rushing to an appointment?  Was she killed by someone drunk driving?  Was she driving?

I find the piece sad and lonely.  Perhaps in that way it can be a restorative to help respond to the relentless pressures of bodily discipline.

Lil B: beat the odds

If you like rap music a little bit, then you are asked to pick favorites.  Part of that is rivalries, where if you are a fan of one group or artist, you stay away from or even deter other people from listening to your favorite musician’s competition.

A more pernicious kind of intellectual trap comes when you feel a rapper wrongs you.  They might release a song or collaboration with someone who you know sucks.  Or they write a verse praising domestic violence or some crap like that.

Lil’ B has crossed his audience’s expectations so many times that they now expect the bizarre (if they’re still around).  You might pick up one of his ‘rap’ albums or mixtapes and discover very little that sounds like rapping.  Stream-of-consciousness un-clever wordplay.  Exceptionally awkward delivery, ideas that trail off.  Songs that make no sense to someone who is trying to listen to it with charitable ears.  It’s not edited to showcase Lil B’s clarity, his music is edited to showcase the mistakes. I’d argue that his performances expose Lil’ B’s vulnerabilities and screw-ups as an invitation to consider similarities.

Part of that is the idea of based — to return the living performative and free-wheeling lyricism.

There is a lot more interesting to talk about the based god.  Consider the political/rhetorical shenanigans of Lil’ B.  Calling his album “I’m gay.” His deeply internet-entwined performance and fanbase.  His discussion with his fans/friends makes an interesting impact on language.  He moves forward with toxic language choices for example ‘based god fucked my bitch.’

There is no positive element to that phrase.  The “my” suggests ownership over a woman.  Objectification and comparison to animals in the word bitch.  The weary trope of a celebrity having sex with someone’s girlfriend or partner.  Disempowerment and pain are really conveyed in this short phrase.

But somehow Lil B uses it to suggest solidarity.  He seems honestly shocked when asked in interviews if he would have sex with someone’s wife or mom — saying he never has.  He simply uses the words to convey something quite differently.

In some ways it sorts out his audience for him.  If you are hip enough to get past the terrible linguistic jump then you can be in the club.  Shouting painfully sexist and disempowering phrase is part of the invitation to something else with Lil B.

In the case of Lil B I just take each release on it’s own.  No reason to love or hate the artist forever.  Sometimes he’ll make a nice tune.  I know, pretty un-hip hop.  Let alone un-feminist.  In this case, we get “beat the odds,” a seemingly sincere, almost saccharine ode to hustling.

Mark my words: from Lil B riding in a sports car with Souljah Boy to riding the bus in this video.  We are going to see the return of working class images and references in hip hop.

Doorknockers on unpacking white privilege

If you aren’t reading the brilliant and insightful blog doorknockers — go catch up.  I was struck this morning by Kristia’s essay inviting a deeper understanding of  the go-to-tool-for-reflection Peggy McIntosh’s essay “Unpacking the backpack of white privilege.”  This article has been THE explanation of injustice to people with power for like 20 years.  And it doesn’t really get at the full power of language and inequality.

I’ve always felt like McIntosh points to a kind of Annunciation frame of justice.  If a person with power can announce that they know how they are privileged then they’re off the hook. Thanks to Doorknockers for some broadening of this discussion.

It should be clear by now that this is not at all intended as a bashing of Peggy McIntosh, but it is very much a critique of academics and schools that maintain at best a lightweight analysis of power. They do this primarily by letting one article by one White woman dominate conversations about privilege, as opposed to hosting a larger, deeper analysis of systems of power in our society. They do this by keeping the numbers of brown-skinned faculty and students low. They do this by rewarding brown-skinned students who agree to shut up in racist, heterosexist classes. They do this by not teaching about privilege, power, and oppression through the very writing, oratory, panel interviews, and reflection of parents and children who work minimum-wage, who are of color, who are political and religious minorities.

Taraji P. Henson makes the cover of Life of Refinement (not TV Guide)

Out-of-control star Taraji P. Henson is the person of the day here at Life of Refinement.  Here she is rocking out on the Chelsea Lately show. Topics include twitter, her naked PETA ad, looking for a man, and the business.

Henson is a boss — she crushes co-stars in Hustle and Flow, Curious case of Benjamin whatever, her lifetime movie (which I didn’t see) and now has a bad-ass TV show.  Of course, TV Guide decided to put the two white male co-stars on TV Guide.  What?

Oscar-nominated actor Taraji P. Henson stars in the new CBS drama Person of Interest, but you wouldn’t know that if you asked TV Guide. According to Henson, the why-are-they-still-a-magazine magazine was planning a cover story on her new show, but the resulting photos featured her two white male costars… and not her. From her Facebook page yesterday:

WOW!!!! TV Guide is NOT including me on the cover with my cast members……. I am the female lead of a 3 member cast and I’m not included on the cover!!!!! Do you see the shit I have to deal with in this business….. I cram to understand!!!!

Sergio Romo and paternity leave

ESPN has an interesting article on the new cultural changes associated with men and sport.  I’ll highlight one case of  SF Giants pitcher Sergio Romo who is taking time off from baseball to be with his family after the birth of a new child.

It’s hard to say for sure if Romo’s brief absence is going to impact the Giants’ postseason chances (the season-long lack of offense is much more glaring than any single pitcher’s missed games), but what isn’t difficult to see are his priorities. He chose family over career, something we’re used to seeing women do, but not men. It’s weird, I’m sure. But sometimes sports (or at least an individual athlete) is a step ahead of the rest of society when it comes to significant cultural changes.

A redefinition of what is considered manly would be yet another example of that.

Polishing the deck chairs on the titanic: climate change and boobs

We are doomed, for real.

I just watched a video with supermodels stripping while they narrate a bizarre rant about global warming.  Something about fifty parts per million.  This is the best that an active ecological movement can come up with?

1.  Layer this against people dying from global warming enhanced storms and diseases, flooding and wretched humans trying to survive in disaster zones.   The way to deal with this massive global change is not to get naked as the earth gets warmer.  Nor is it to gaze at supermodels hoping that people will be inspired. These ideas are dumb.

2.  The incentive for humans to want to address global warming should be self interest.  Do you want to cradle your dying loved ones in an atmosphere less hospitable to humans?  The advertisement suggests that the true incentive is to see some tits.  It is implied that if humans in the USA can reduce emissions sufficiently, then these models will strip fully naked instead of to their skivvies.  What a bargain.   I wonder if they got this in writing from the supermodels — some kind of hooker deal where they have to have sex with the director if humans can learn to live in a steady-state economy.

3.  Oppression of women and consumer fashion culture are part of global warming.  To layer more sexist and consumerist stuff (disney t-shirt in the strip show) as a placebo remedy is toxic.

No link or reference to the group or ad itself is intentional.  Why give them another platform.

“This would not happen if I had a penis!”

It’s also exciting to see Poehler nominated alongside Tina Fey, her close friend, former colleague on Saturday Night Live and fellow feminist comedy lady person. One of the greatest things about Fey’s book, Bossypants, is the way she writes about Poehler, which is with enormous respect and affection. One chapter is called “One in a Series of Love Letters to Amy Poehler.” In one scene in that chapter, Fey recalls a day when she, Poehler, and a bunch of other performers were in the SNL writer’s room and Poehler was joking around.

Amy was in the middle of some such nonsense with Seth Meyers across the table, and she did something vulgar as a joke. I can’t remember what it was exactly, except it was dirty and loud and ‘unladylike.’

Jimmy Fallon, who was arguably the star of the show at the time, turned to her and in a faux-squeamish voice said, ‘Stop that! It’s not cute! I don’t like it.’ Amy dropped what she was doing, went black in the eyes for a second, and wheeled around on him. ‘I don’t fucking care if you like it.’ Jimmy was visibly startled. Amy went right back to enjoying her ridiculous bit. I should make it clear that Jimmy and Amy are very good friends and there was never any real beef between them. (Insert penis joke here.)

With that exchange, a comic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasn’t there to be cute. She wasn’t there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys’ scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you like it.
